Scorpion stings are a public health problem in Morocco, especially among children, who experience the most severe cases. Epidemiological and clinical findings on scorpion stings in Fez, Morocco, were evaluated in this investigation. Of 163 cases that required medical attention, 62.6% were male children. The mean age of patients was 4.8 ± 3.4 years. The mean time between stings and first medical attention was 3.36 ± 2.5 hours. Almost all cases occurred in the summer (94%) and extremities represented the most frequent sting sites (86.5%). Local pain, hyperemia, scarification, vomiting, sweating, restlessness, tachycardia and tachypnea were the observed clinical symptoms. Regarding severity, 55.2% of patients belonged to class III, followed by class II...

Economic impact of digital dermatitis treatment on a dairy farm: an application of the break-even analysis Ciência Rural
Akin,Ibrahim; Akin,Tugba.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the economic efficiency of DD treatment on milk yield in lame cows suffering from DD. A total of 33 Holstein dairy cows with DD were included in the study. The milk yields were assessed as (1st); beginning milk production (BMP), (2nd); peak milk production before the diagnosis (PMPBD), (3rd); diagnosis day milk production (DMP), and (4th); post-treatment milk production (TMP). In the first stage of analyses, using the E-views equity test of means program, cows were classified into three groups for diagnosis time of DD according to the day in milk (DIM) (Group 1: 0 ≤ DIM ≤ 50, Group 2: 51 ≤ DIM ≤ 100, and Group 3: 101 ≤ DIM ≤ 150). Analysis of variance (ANOVA F-Test) and the Welch F-Test were conducted to compare the...

Biochemical association between essential trace elements and susceptibility to Leishmania major in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice BJID
Amini,Marzyeh; Nahrevanian,Hossein; Khatami,Shohreh; Farahmand,Mahin; Mirkhani,Fatemeh; Javadian,Seifoddin.
Several enzymes that contribute to immune system responses require zinc and copper as trace elements for their activity. We examined zinc and copper levels in two susceptible Balb/c mouse lines and resistant C57bl/6 mice infected with Leishmania major MRHO/IR/75/ER, a prevalent strain that causes cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran. Serum Zn and Cu were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Higher Cu levels were found in infected C57bl/6 mice and higher Zn levels were found in infected Balb/c mice. Also, Cu/Zn ratios were increased in both the Balb/c and the C57bl/6 mice. We conclude that concentrations of essential trace elements vary during cutaneous leishmaniasis infection and that this variation is associated with...

Use of antivenoms for the treatment of envenomation by Elapidae snakes in Guinea, Sub-Saharan Africa J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Baldé,Mamadou C; Chippaux,Jean-Philippe; Boiro,Mamadou Y; Stock,Roberto P; Massougbodji,Achille.
Background In Guinea Elapids are responsible for 20% of envenomations. The associated case fatality rate (CFR) ranged 15-27%, irrespective of treatment. Results We studied 77 neurotoxic envenomations divided in 3 groups: a set of patients that received only traditional or symptomatic treatments, and two other groups that received either 2 or 4 initial vials of Antivipmyn® Africa renewed as necessary. CFR was 27.3%, 15.4% and 17.6%, respectively. Although antivenom treatment was likely to reduce CFR, it didn’t seem to have an obvious clinical benefit for the patients, suggesting a low treatment efficacy. Mean delay to treatment or clinical stages were not significantly different between the patients who recovered and the patients who died, or between...

Effect of temperature on two-phase anaerobic reactors treating slaughterhouse wastewater BABT
Beux,Simone; Nunes,Ezequiel; Barana,Ana Cláudia.
The effectiveness of the anaerobic treatment of effluent from a swine and bovine slaughterhouse was assessed in two sets of two-phase anaerobic digesters, operated with or without temperature control. Set A, consisting of an acidogenic reactor with recirculation and an upflow biological filter as the methanogenic phase, was operated at room temperature, while set B, consisting of an acidogenic reactor without recirculation and an upflow biological filter as the methanogenic phase, was maintained at 32°C. The methanogenic reactors showed COD (Chemical Demand of Oxygen) removal above 60% for HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) values of 20, 15, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 days. When the HRT value in those reactors was changed to 1 day, the COD percentage removal decreased...

Bilan du suivi de l'exploitation industrielle de la crépidule en Bretagne Nord (baies de Saint-Brieuc et du Mont Saint-Michel) 2002-2005 ArchiMer
Blanchard, Michel; Hamon, Dominique.
The slipper-limpet (Crepidula fornicata) is a marine gastropod which causes serious perturbations in shellfish beds, because of spatial spreading and density rising. Along French coasts, in Northern Brittany, two bays are highly colonized : bay of Saint-Brieuc, centre for scallops fishery, and bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, a famous oyster-farming area, with a total limpet stock about 450 000 metric tons. The association AREVAL was founded in 2001 to manage there, an industrial collect of limpets by a succing-dredge, followed ashore by a treatment for calcareous soil improvement. The scientific survey, contracted to IFREMER, included measurements of long andshort-term dredge's effects on grounds and limpet population, and proposals to set up dredging...

Extracellular vesicles: structure, function, and potential clinical uses in renal diseases BJMBR
Borges,F.T.; Reis,L.A.; Schor,N..
Interest in the role of extracellular vesicles in various diseases including cancer has been increasing. Extracellular vesicles include microvesicles, exosomes, apoptotic bodies, and argosomes, and are classified by size, content, synthesis, and function. Currently, the best characterized are exosomes and microvesicles. Exosomes are small vesicles (40-100 nm) involved in intercellular communication regardless of the distance between them. They are found in various biological fluids such as plasma, serum, and breast milk, and are formed from multivesicular bodies through the inward budding of the endosome membrane. Microvesicles are 100-1000 nm vesicles released from the cell by the outward budding of the plasma membrane. The therapeutic potential of...

Short and long period optimization of drug doses in the treatment of AIDS Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAETANO,MARCO A. L.; YONEYAMA,TAKASHI.
Numerical optimization techniques are useful in solving problems of computing the best inputs for systems described by mathematical models and when the objectives can be stated in a quantitative form. This work concerns the problem of optimizing the drug doses in the treatment of AIDS in terms of achieving a balance between the therapeutic response and the side effects. A mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV viruses and CD4 cells is used to compute the short term optimal drug doses in the treatments of patients with AIDS by a direct method of optimization using a cost function of Bolza type. The model parameters were fitted to actual published clinical data. In order to simplify the numerical procedures, the control law is expressed as a...

A weight loss protocol and owners participation in the treatment of canine obesity Ciência Rural
Carciofi,Aulus Cavalieri; Gonçalves,Karina Nogueira Venturelli; Vasconcellos,Ricardo Souza; Bazolli,Rodrigo Sousa; Brunetto,Márcio Antonio; Prada,Flávio.
The success of a weight loss program for pets depends on the owners collaboration. Their compliance is fundamental in establishing the correct food management. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a weight loss program in two groups of dogs, one maintained under experimental conditions and the other with their owners. The same hypocaloric food was used to feed all animals, the amount being restricted to 60% of the estimated maintenance energy requirement for a 15% reduction of the present body weight of the dog. The animals were followed during 90 days. A standard questionnaire was used to study the owners' perception of obesity and its treatment. The protocol and the diet were found to be effective. The control dogs had an...

Detection of HCV by PCR in serum and PBMC of patients with hepatitis C after treatment BJID
Cavalheiro,Norma de Paula; Filgueiras,Thelma Cristina; Melo,Carlos Eduardo; Morimitsu,Suzana Rie; Araújo,Evaldo Stanislau Affonso de; Tengan,Fátima Mitiko; Barone,Antonio Alci.
Although hepatitis C is mainly hepatotropic, some studies suggest that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), using them as a reservoir, which might contribute to the development of resistance to treatment. Fifty-four hepatitis-C patients, who had been submitted to treatment, were selected. Blood samples were collected on the same day for the detection of HCV RNA in serum and PBMC by PCR, using the Amplicor HCV 2.0 assay (Roche Diagnostics). HCV genotyping was performed using the INNO-LiPA HCV kit (Versant, Bayer Diagnostics). HCV RNA was detected in both serum and PBMC in 35 (64%) patients and no RNA in 16 (29.6%). Disagreement between the serum and PBMC results was observed for three patients (5.6%), with HCV RNA being...

Traitement des crevettes contre le noircissement .Mise au point d'une ligne de traitement ArchiMer
Chantreau, Patrick.
Once fished, the shrimps must be cooled quickly in water cooled in order to slow down all chemical and bacteriological activities. In addition, in order to avoid blackening (mélanose) shrimps (céphalothorax and legs) it is necessary to treat those with an antioxydant product. The product currently used to inhibit this enzymatic change is the soda niétabisuifite (Na-> S7 O5), until now, after being fished. the shrimps were directly soaked in a cooled water tank, containing the pesticide. The solution of treatment was progressively prepared needs. The concentration of this one was approximately 2 to 3% of métabisulfite, that is to say 6 to 9 G of SO2 per liter for a starting product containing 320 G of SO2 approximately. In order to preserve a good...

Traitement des langoustines et des crevettes contre le noircissement ArchiMer
Chantreau, Patrick; Vallet, Jean-luc.
The conservation of crawfish requires the use of chemical substances making it possible to limit blackening. This phenomenon this blackening (melanine) is due to the coordinated action of three elements: - oxygen, - an enzyme (cupro-protein), - a suitable substrate, tyrosin or the dihydroxyphénylalanine. The absence of the one of them allows a notorious reduction in the phenomenon. Several antioxydant products, were used to prevent the formation of the mélanine. The métabisutfite of soda or potassium as well as soda bisulfite in acid solution, are currently used to treat crawfish and shrimps. Several methods of use of these pesticides exist, we propose in this report to present the principal ones, as well as the control methods making it possible to...

Pre-hospital treatment of snake envenomation in patients presented AT a tertiary care hospital in Northwestern India J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Chauhan,S.; Faruqi,S.; Bhalla,A.; Sharma,N.; Varma,S.; Bali,J..
Snakebite is an important medical emergency. Anti-snake venom along with supportive care is the only specific treatment. However, many people put their faith in non-registered medical practitioners. Where medical aid is available, lack of trained health personnel jeopardizes the situation. This retrospective study, the first of its kind, was aimed at studying the pre-hospital treatment as well as the behavior of patients bitten by snakes and referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. A total of 88 cases that occurred between January 1997 and December 2001 were studied. Seventy patients received treatment prior to admission (the majority was treated by non-registered medical practitioners, registered medical...

Candida infections account for 80% of all fungal infections in the hospital environment, including bloodstream, urinary tract and surgical site infections. Bloodstream infections are now a major challenge for tertiary hospitals worldwide due to their high prevalence and mortality rates. The incidence of candidemia in tertiary public hospitals in Brazil is approximately 2.5 cases per 1000 hospital admissions. Due to the importance of this infection, the authors provide a review of the diversity of the genus Candida and its clinical relevance, the therapeutic options and discuss the treatment of major infections caused by Candida. Each topography is discussed with regard to epidemiological, clinical and laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations...

The microbiome and inborn errors of metabolism: Why we should look carefully at their interplay? Genet. Mol. Biol.
Colonetti,Karina; Roesch,Luiz Fernando; Schwartz,Ida Vanessa Doederlein.
Abstract Research into the influence of the microbiome on the human body has been shedding new light on diseases long known to be multifactorial, such as obesity, mood disorders, autism, and inflammatory bowel disease. Although inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are monogenic diseases, genotype alone is not enough to explain the wide phenotypic variability observed in patients with these conditions. Genetics and diet exert a strong influence on the microbiome, and diet is used (alone or as an adjuvant) in the treatment of many IEMs. This review will describe how the effects of the microbiome on the host can interfere with IEM phenotypes through interactions with organs such as the liver and brain, two of the structures most commonly affected by IEMs. The...
